The Silent New Girl

At Greenfield Middle School, a new student joined Class 5-B.

Her name was Aanya.

She did not speak much.

On her first day, she simply stood beside the teacher and looked at the floor.

When the teacher asked her questions, she nodded or shook her head.

The other children became curious.

Some whispered, “Why doesn’t she talk?”

Others thought she was shy.

Aanya sat alone during breaks, reading a small notebook she always carried.

No one tried to talk to her much.

Except one boy.

His name was Arjun.

Arjun was not the most talkative student either, but he liked observing people.

One afternoon, he noticed Aanya sitting alone under a tree, drawing in her notebook.

He slowly walked over.

“Nice drawing,” he said softly.

Aanya looked at him but did not speak.

She simply showed him the page.

It was a picture of a small house surrounded by mountains.

Arjun smiled.

“It looks peaceful.”

Aanya nodded.

That was their first small conversation.

The next day, Arjun sat near her during lunch.

He did not ask too many questions.

He simply shared his lunch quietly.

Aanya watched him for a moment, then accepted it with a small smile.

Days passed like this.

Arjun never forced her to talk.

He just stayed nearby, sometimes showing her small sketches, sometimes telling short stories.

Aanya responded in her own way—through drawings, nods, and gentle expressions.

One day, the school announced a group project.

Students had to work in pairs and present a story using drawings or charts.

Arjun immediately turned to Aanya.

“Let’s work together,” he said.

Aanya looked unsure for a moment, then nodded.

They decided to create a story about friendship without words.

Arjun wrote the story outline.

Aanya drew the pictures.

The story showed two children who did not speak the same language but became friends through kindness and actions.

As they worked together, something special happened.

Aanya began to feel more comfortable.

She started pointing at things.

Then whispering short words.

Arjun never reacted with surprise.

He simply smiled and continued working with her.

On presentation day, their project was selected to be shown in front of the whole class.

Arjun spoke confidently.

Then Aanya stood beside him.

There was silence in the room.

Everyone expected her not to speak.

But she took a small breath and said softly,

“Friendship… does not need many words.”

The classroom became completely quiet.

Then the teacher smiled.

“And sometimes,” she said, “the most important words are the ones spoken after understanding.”

The class clapped warmly.

After that day, Aanya changed slowly.

She started greeting classmates.

She began answering simple questions.

And she even joined group games during lunch breaks.

But she still kept her calm nature.

Arjun never took credit for helping her.

When someone asked him how she became so confident, he said,

“She just needed time. Everyone does.”

Months later, Aanya gave Arjun a small drawing.

It showed two friends sitting under a tree, looking at the sky.

Below it, she had written just one word:

“Thanks.”

Arjun smiled.

“That’s more than enough,” he said.

From that day on, Aanya was no longer “the silent girl” in class.

She was simply Aanya.

A friend.

A classmate.

And someone who had finally found her voice in her own time
